PeakFinder USA West App Reviews

GPS?

Great concept, but more often than not the GPS cannot find where you are, rendering the program useless.

Not enough

I live in the Sierras, and this app only labels a couple of the mountains around me. In other locations its been great.

Great App when you are in the mountains

More than once Ive looked at a peak in the distance and wondered what it was. With this app I have been able to find peak names easily. Handy for hikers to help orientate and for tourist that want to know the names of peaks in their photos.

Great app

Countless time Ive looked at the mtns and wondered what a peak name is, then found the 3-4 around and behind it. Only once so far could it not locate or orient but I was complelty out of cell and data range. Must have for the weekend climber

Name that peak

I looked of over a year for a poster that would name the peaks as seen from my job. Bam! A friend showed me this app and I can name them wherever I go. The ability to show the peaks visible from a summit or a different elevation is awesome.

Pretty Fun

Works well. Does not obtain GPS location well without network connection, but this might be more of an iPhone issue.

Must have for hikers!

This app has been great for hikes in Colorado. I was able to quickly orient and determine peaks I was hiking through with ease. GPS found me every time, even in low areas. Highly recommend!!!

Terrible. Rarely finds correct peak

In Summit County, Colorado where they have plenty of peaks. Rarely does it point to correct peak. Does NOT SCROLL when you rotate to different peaks. Cannot count on it to point correct peaks so it is WORTHLESS! Ive tried to give this app a chance with repeated tests and trials. Not worth any money.

Works well

It works great in Grand County, Colorado. Panning manually works better than aiming the phone at the peaks.

Works great 95% of the time

Works great in the Denver area and pretty much throughout Colorado. In really remote areas sometimes cant identify a mountain or too. Its my favorite app for the iPhone.

Good App

Works alright. Not perfect but certainly worth having in the mountains where there is cell range.

The Best

This is my favorite app -- period. I live at 9000 in the San Juan Mts of SW Colorado. I have been using this app for about 4 months now, several times a week at least. It has never once failed to locate me (occasionally it takes several attempts to get located - no big deal) and has always identified every peak Ive viewed, both here in my home area and in other parts of the state that I have traveled to this past summer. For many decades now, when on top of a peak, Ive gotten out the compass and spread a map to identify peaks in the distance - now I just open PeakFinder and its all laid out, easy as you please. This app deserves 5 stars because it works, simply and accurately. Just plain fun.

Helpful app when hiking

This app does a good job in identifying the peaks we see during our hikes. Line drawings match the peak outlines well!

Cool. Should use camera

Neat. Would be great if it used camera and gave peak info overlay on the real world view. Its always hard to get the sketch line schematic to align well with the exact orientation of the phone.

I love this thing!

I moved into the Colorado mountains outside of Denver recently and like to know what I can see. This app is amazing. Not only can it identify the peaks on the horizon, but you can change your location to any given point to visualize things from a different perspective. Its a great way to explore and learn.

This is really cool!

I love using this app! Ive "found" most of the peaks around where I live easily and much more accurately than from a map. Get this one if you spend much time outdoors!!

Dont buy this app!!!!

Doesnt use a camera and isnt accurate. Couldnt even identify a 14er right in front of us. Keep shopping elsewhere.

Great views & aid to planning trips

In real world situations, one mountain is hidden by closer, shorter mountains. For my mountain research, Peak Finder adds an important dimension, elevation. Better for me than the way a topo map or Google Earth gives elevation. I love to jump from peak to peak and look in 360°. Peak Finder can be used "offline" because mountains often block cellular service. Also the PDF output is a good reference. This is a great app, and I expect it to only get better. A suggestion is to improve how Favorites are created, named and edited.

Awesome for Hiking

I love being able to always find out what peak that is no matter where I am.

Very useful

Works great and useful for figuring out where you are.
